The State of the Nation Address, given by the Mexican president every September 1, used to be a special event. Schools and federal offices were closed for the day and the President’s speech, typically a multi-hour propaganda–fest extolling the accomplishments of the ruling party, was aired live on all TV and radio stations. There was also a national ban on serving alcohol until the speech was over, even in Mexico City hotels. Now you can drink away in the Best Bars in Mexico.
